our approach

Why work with Calverts?

print

Print buyers come to Calverts for four main reasons - our creativity, quality, expert advice and track record in sustainable printing.

We have proper conversations with our clients, to help them realise their print ambitions - from fairtrade teaching tools and low carbon travel guides to art and science comics and high end books. There's almost no print idea we can't turn into reality.

We have a hard-earned reputation as 'green' printers. We're always investing, learning and sharing what we know about every aspect of low environmental impact communications.

And Calverts worker co-operative business model means we're able to improve continuously, by putting our money into state-of-the art repro and printing hardware, software and training - instead of paying dividends to outside owners and shareholders.

All this adds up to higher quality, higher impact print; timely delivery - and a better print experience.

Iso 14001 certified logo

Design and print affect the environment. Calverts has therefore implemented an environmental management system to the requirements of ISO 14001 to reduce our negative environmental impacts.

We are committed to comply with or exceed the requirements of environmental legislation and other environmental initiatives to which we subscribe. We are also committed to the prevention of pollution and continual improvement.

Our objectives are to:

1) Reduce our carbon emissions

2) Reduce the impact of paper use on natural resources

3) Improve resource efficiency and recycling

We have set up programmes to achieve this with targets and time scales.

Send artwork to Calverts

While we encourage clients to drop in with their artwork you can, if you prefer, upload artwork to a password protected space on our server.

If you have a user name and password please upload your artwork. If you have not used our FTP system before please email your name, job reference and operating system and we will set you up with a dedicated folder on our server.

Before sending artwork files to Calverts for printing, we ask that you quickly run through the following checklist - NB: we prefer original artwork files rather than pdf:

  • Have you included all the image files?
  • Have you added bleeds at page edges?
  • Although we hold the Adobe font library we would recommend you supply the fonts you use. When sending fonts could you please compress these prior to sending otherwise we cannot guarantee the fonts will work.
  • For four process colour printing, have you set up colours as CMYK rather than RGB?
  • Is the artwork created with the right number of colours and have you specified relevant pantone numbers and kept the naming of them consistent throughout? (eg: don’t use 305C and 305 CVC and 305U – just use one!)
  • Are the images at a high enough resolution to reproduce well (minimum 300 dpi)?
  • When sending the artwork to us, have you made sure to include either a dummy copy or a pdf visual so that we can see what should be included and how it folds or backs up? If you do not supply this there will be an additional charge of £45 for us to identify any potential problems and output lasers
  • Please note if you intend to supply artwork as pdf files then you must have some experience of creating artwork for print and we strongly recommend using Acrobat Distiller rather than saving directly from for example, Indesign or Illustrator.
  • If you are unsure as to the settings then either check the following web sites -

How to create a PDF file in Publisher, or How to create Adobe PDF files for Print (PDF, 2mb). Starting from scratch? Learn how to correctly set up Indesign files for print - includes spot colour, bleed, etc.

NB: Artwork files which are not supplied correctly or re-sent after proofing may incur extra charges.
